AFC Bailgate 1-1 AFC West End

AFC West End produced a season best performance as they became the first side to take points of league leaders AFC Bailgate.

A mixture of depleted personnel and adapting to the opposition led managers Ady Gray and Ryan Green to change formation deploying a 5-3-2 for the first time this season.

AFC started well and grew into the game with confidence, finding space and moving the ball with freedom. Taking chances if and when they came would be key for West End and Luis Boulton did just that in the eighth minute. Pouncing on a loose ball on the edge of the box, Boulton looped a shot over the Bailgate keeper into the top corner. Confidence continued to grow and AFC pushed for what would’ve been a deserved second goal, only to see Harry Stubbs denied by a linesman’s flag.

AFC deservedly lead at half time, but knew the second half would be a different challenge entirely. The second half saw the expected reaction from the league leaders, their pressure constant, but AFC dealt with it brilliantly.

The game’s key moment took place in the 81st minute, whilst defending a disputed corner the referee saw a push from AFC defender Callum Martin and despite numerous complaints the penalty stood. AFC Bailgate’s captain made no mistake from the spot and the momentum had seemingly swung in favour of Bailgate. Still on the back foot from conceding the equaliser AFC conceded a second penalty only a couple of minutes later. This time AFC keeper Ewan Downes was equal to the arguably far better spot kick, turning it around his left post.

The final minutes, plus the staggering eight added on by the referee saw AFC cling desperately to their point but also threaten to steal all three through a breakaway by the tireless Harry Stubbs. Both defences held and Bailgate had been denied victory in the league for the first time this season. A result and performance to be proud of for AFC West End.

AFC West End 3-2 Welton FC Reserves

A late comeback helped AFC West End secure back to back league wins.

For the second week running AFC took the lead shortly before half time, Aaron Gorman reacting quickest after the Welton keeper failed to claim a cross.

West End were good value for their lead at half time but the concession of two soft goals in quick succession early in the second half led them with everything to do.

Their route back into the game came from the penalty spot after the referee penalised Welton for a handball. Skipper Aaron Gorman placed the pressure kick to the keeper’s left to level the game, and give AFC back the momentum.

The comeback was complete with five minutes to go, Luis Boulton’s low corner was swept home emphatically by Matt Page.

A courageous comeback, but AFC will need to find another gear when they take on currently unbeaten league leaders AFC Bailgate next weekend.

AFC tame The Blue Lion to progress in cup

The Blue Lion 0-2 AFC West End

AFC West End fought off a spirited Blue Lion to remain unbeaten and progress into the first round proper of the Ron Eaglen Cup.

Just like in their season opener West End took the early advantage as Ryan Green’s shot travelled through a crowd of bodies before being diverted into the net by an unlucky Blue Lion defender.

Bar a couple of lapses in concentration West End controlled the first half, they had the ball in the net again but a late offside flag denied Euan Morris his second goal in two games.

After the break AFC doubled their advantage when Lee Matsell’s long range free kick eluded the Blue Lion keeper. Following the goal the game’s tempo dropped for a short time until tempers flared following a clash between Rick Smith and a Blue Lion player who picked a up a booking.

This gave The Blue Lion a injection of energy and they pushed hard to get back into the game, but AFC weathered the storm to pick up a deserved win and clean sheet.

Following the game the draw was made for the first round proper, AFC will travel to Old Boys United on 8th October. Continue reading AFC tame The Blue Lion to progress in cup

AFC West End 2-2 FVA Jerusalem Res

AFC made a positive start to the new season after securing a point in an even game with FVA Jerusalem Reserves.

West End made the perfect start to their first game at their new home at Bishop Grosseteste College, debutant Euan Morris scoring a brave header to put them in front with their first effort on goal.

As the first half progressed Jerusalem grew into the game and began creating chances, after West End weathered the initial storm they were struck by a sucker punch, a long range effort catching new keeper Elliot Totton off guard and flying into the top corner.

Despite being pegged back just before half time it was West End who took control in the second half, and they retook the lead midway through the second half. On one of the few occasions when they managed to get numerous bodies a rebound fell to Dan Arden and he gave the keeper no chance.

AFC held the lead until the last ten minutes defending resolutely but were caught out by a long ball down the middle, as Jerusalem levelled with a simple effort.

The game ended 2-2 an outcome neither team could have any complaints over.
